all shoved together.
Elbow to elbow-
Not eye to eye.
Ignoring the touches,
the quick judging glances.
Hoping you're better
than the body next to you.
The throats are all bleeting;
the noise has no meaning.
Just to say something:
"The weather is fine."
Down in the puddle,
look up in the rain drops
Please just say something.
The weather is fine.
Hold your bag close.
Watch your umbrella.
Put checks on your list.
Touch the tips of your hair.
Avoid conversation.
Just smile and nod.
This flock must look busy-
just waiting in line.
One more minute,
you can check time again.
How much longer
till we get there?
A city of bodies
all shoved in together.
Elbow to elbow-
but not eye to eye.
Ignoring the touches,
the quick judging glances,
Hoping your better
than the body next to you.
